AGL "Digital" Meters coming to Mudgee.
Read "SMART" Meters! You can opt-out, but DO IT NOW.
Yesterday I received notification from AGL about “Your Electricity Meter Upgrade” - to a “Digital Meter”. In the Mudgee township, where I live.
Yes, they are called SMART meters when you look in your AGL account portal, but I’m guessing they have had so much pushback that they’re trying to make it all look a bit sexier.. and failing… because “Digital” anything is getting a sideways glance (at least) these days.
OPTING OUT
You can opt-out by going to www.agl.com.au/optout. Clearly shown in the communications (in my case a letter in the mail).
I need to opt-out by 16 August 2024.

they have a proviso on that above link/page, when you go there, that if my old meter is not working correctly, or something, they will do it anyway. Hmmm.
And
When I entered my details to the above page I think it said that it takes 4 weeks to register or something… Such are the organizational skills of our essential energy suppliers! So don’t dilly dally and leave opting out to the last minute - or woops, you may not have opted out after all…! Sorry I did not take note of the exact wording on how long my request was going to take to register … Perhaps someone can put the actual wording in the comments when they do this. I think it comes up after you have sent your completed online form.
The letter was dated June 24, 2024, received July 2, 2024.
They have given me 7 1/2 weeks from the date of their letter to optout - not counting their “4 weeks to register” or whatever it was.
From the date of the receipt of the letter I have 5 1/2 weeks to optout, minus “4 weeks to register” (whatever that message was) leaving 8 WORKING DAYS TO OPTOUT!
PAY ATTENTION…
IF YOU ARE GOING TO OPTOUT FROM AGL’S DIGITAL SMART METER DO IT AS SOON AS YOU GET THE NOTIFICATION.

I do not have time today to do a deep dive into SMART electricity (and water) meters, but the information is VERY accessible on the internet.
SMART METERS: SURVEILLANCE CONCERNS
Similarly, I do not have time today to give you details on this, so I would ask you to research how SMART meters have the potential to surveil what is going on in every house/building that installs them.
